SCOTTSDALE DEMOCRATIC LUNCHEON CLUB
“Since 1976–at least!”

Dear Friend,
Just to let you know that DENNIS DECONCINI,
U.S. Senator, Retired, and member of the Arizona
Board of Regents, will be the guest speaker of the
SCOTTSDALE DEMOCRATIC LUNCHEON CLUB
on Saturday, September 28th, at 2:00 PM at the
SCOTTSDALE LIBRARY CIVIC CENTER AUDITORIUM.
The topic of his talk will be: “The U.S. Senate Then and Now:
Can Civility Appear Again?” There will be a question, answer,
and discussion period after his talk. The public is invited.
There will be no admission charge. Please note:
At this particular meeting, lunch will not be available.
Food can be obtained at nearby restaurants prior to
or after the event.
DENNIS’ public service career has spanned almost
five decades. It began from 1965-1966 when he was
Special Legal Counsel and Administrative Assistant
to Democratic Governor Sam Goddard. Moreover,
he chaired in 1974 Democrat Raul Castro’s successful
campaign for Governor of Arizona. Although DENNIS was
Pima County (Tucson) Attorney at that time from
1973 to 1976, neither state law nor county ordinance
prohibited him from playing a major role in Castro’s
effort. (FROM THE CENTER OF THE AISLE, p.64.)
While DENNIS was U.S. Senator
from 1977-1995, he issued a statement to
the Arizona press and wrote a letter to President
Reagan, urging him to nominate Sandra
Day O’Connor for the Supreme Court. Further, he
influenced Senator Goldwater to second his idea
to the President. President Reagan then nominated
her and, after DENNIS supported her throughout the
nomination process, she was confirmed and
became the first woman to serve on the
U.S. Supreme Court. (FROM THE CENTER OF
THE AISLE, pp. 132-133.)
In addition, since DENNIS completed his third
U.S. Senate term in 1995, no other Democrat
has yet to be elected to that position.
I hope you will join us on September 28th to
hear DENNIS’ presentation. DENNIS always
has something interesting to say infused with
his understated sense of humor. His talk and
the discussion afterwards promise to be
a worthwhile civic engagement happening.
Please RSVP to the phone number above or
send me an e-mail so I can get an idea of
how many are going to attend.
Thank you, and tell and bring a friend.
See you there!
Sincerely,
John
